Between 1980 and 2000 Whittier neighborhood grew at a faster rate than the city. In this period, the city grew by 3.1 percent, while the neighborhood population expanded by almost 20 percent.

Population growth has brought more working-age residents, children and adolescents to Whittier, while the older population tended to decrease. The number of those 65 years and older decreased by more than half since 1980. After a reduction in the 18- to 24-year-old population in 1990, the number of people in this age group residing in Whittier increased in 2000 but not to the level it had reached in 1980.

The ethnic makeup of the population changed substantially between 1980 and 2000. The neighborhood's white population decreased to less than 50 percent of the total, and Hispanic residents increased in number by almost 500 percent during the 1990s from about 530 to more than 3,000. The Asian population in Whittier also grew, by slightly more than 100 percent.
