Near North increased its population by 27.4 percent between 1980 and 2000 to 6,921 residents.

Near North gained population during the 1980s due to increasing youth and working-age populations. The school-age population, especially children and adolescents, rose significantly – by 34 percent between 1980 and 2000. The population over the age of 65 decreased by 42 percent in the same period.

Near North is a diverse neighborhood. In 2000, the population was 58 percent black, 14 percent Asian, 12 percent white and 9 percent Hispanic. The black population grew significantly between 1980 and 1990, and then leveled off in 2000. The white and American Indian populations declined over time. The Hispanic population declined in the '80s but then quadrupled by 2000. The Asian population grew steadily between 1980 and 2000.
