Between 1980 and 2000, the Field neighborhood experienced an 8.4 percent decrease in population. During the same period the overall population of Minneapolis grew by 3.1 percent.

Between 1980 and 1990, the number of 25- to 44-year-olds increased considerably, but fell the following decade. The 45- to 64-year-old population increased significantly in the 1990s, however, there was a decrease of children, and also people in the 65- to 84-year-old age group. Since 1980 the oldest bracket of the population, those 85 years old and over, has been relatively stable.

The ethnic makeup of Field has seen percentage increases of Hispanic and Asian populations from 1980 to 2000. Both groups have risen in the overall ethnic distribution from less than 1 percent in 1980 to more than 3 percent in 2000. The black population decreased significantly between 1980 and 2000, dropping from 32 percent to 23 percent during this time. The white population remained about the same over the same period, making up around 64 percent of the population.
