Downtown West had a strong population increase of 30.2 percent between 1980 and 2000, gaining more than 660 residents. Minneapolis' population increased 3.1 percent during this period.

The adult population in Downtown West was 84 percent of the total population in 2000. Between 1980 and 2000, it increased 63 percent. Children, even though they were a small percentage of the population, also had a strong increase, more than doubling between 1980 and 2000. On the other hand, the senior population decreased 46 percent.

Downtown West's ethnicity changed between 1980 and 2000. All ethnic group populations except white increased. The white population was 88 percent of the total population in 1980 and 65 percent in 2000. The black population is the second largest ethnic group. They were 7 percent of the neighborhood's population in 1980 and 23 percent in 2000.
