Between 1980 and 2000 the population of Bottineau increased 8.9 percent compared to a 3.1 percent increase citywide. This entire population increase for Bottineau took place between 1990 and 2000.

Between 1980 and 2000 the adult population in Bottineau grew by 18 percent, and the population of children and adolescents grew by 11 percent. The age groups with the biggest percentage decreases in population during this same time period were 65 to 84 and over 85: more than 29 percent and 27 percent respectively.

Bottineau's ethnic makeup changed substantially between 1980 and 2000. The neighborhood had increases in all ethnic groups with the exception of whites who declined in numbers by 20 percent during this time period. Whites made up 96 percent of the population in 1980, 90 percent in 1990 and 71 percent in 2000.
