Building permits

The City requires you to get a building permit before you start a construction project.

Find your project

Every type of home improvement project is subject to certain rules. Take time to read those rules before you start your project. It will save you time and money.

Construction permits

We issue many types of construction permits to ensure that what you build:

  • Complies with the building code and City zoning ordinances
  • Is a safe space to work in and occupy

One of the construction permits is called a Building Permit.

If you start work on a project before you get a Building Permit you will be violating the building code and City ordinances.

Fees and fines

Building permit fees are based upon the valuation of the job including labor and materials.

If you begin construction work before you get a permit:

  • We may double your fees and charge fines.
  • You may have to demolish some or all of your work to:
    • Make it comply with building codes
    • Allow us to see if it complies with building codes
