Minneapolis Food Handler Training

The Minneapolis Health Department has partnered with StateFoodSafety.com to provide online food handler training. Food workers in Minneapolis are encouraged to take an online basic food Handler Training course, but it is not required. 

The food handler trainings are valuable for anyone preparing food in a commercial kitchen or working in a food business. This includes kitchen food handlers, servers and other staff (and anyone who would like to work in a commercial food business). 

Some of the topics covered in the trainings are: keeping food safe, temperature danger zone, hot and cold holding, avoiding cross-contamination, personal hygiene, and cleaning and sanitizing.

No previous food safety training is required.

The trainings are not Food Manager Protection Certification. Find certified food manager classes on the Minnesota Department of Health website

Three trainings are available. Scroll down to learn about each training. Chose the course that is best for you. The trainings take approximately 60 to 75 minutes to complete.

Vouchers

Employees at Minneapolis licensed food businesses may take the training for free with a Minneapolis Health Department voucher. 

Minneapolis licensed food businesses can contact the Minneapolis Health Department to request vouchers for their employees.

To request vouchers, email food@minneapolismn.gov. Include the Minneapolis business name and address, course name(s), and the number(s) of vouchers requested. 

A food handler certificate and card is awarded to every person who successfully completes any of the training courses.

Food workers outside Minneapolis can also take the training. The cost is $20 per course. Only credit, debit and prepaid debit cards are accepted. 

The trainings and tests are available online 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Request Voucher Codes

To request voucher codes complete the Voucher Code Request form or call 612-673-3544. Include your name, email, phone number, business name, address, course name and number of voucher(s). If you are a vendor, include the market or events where you participate.

Online training courses

Food Handler Level 1 Training (Simplified)

The Food Handler Level 1 Training covers the same information as the Food Handler Level 2 Training in a simplified format.

This training is for people who speak English as a second language, have a visual learning style or have special needs who work, or would like to work, in a commercial food business.    

The Food Handler Level 1 Training is available in English and Spanish.

The training is approximately one-hour long. The training is divided into five sections, or modules. 

At the end of each module is a short test. The course has a total of 30 test questions. In order to receive the course certificate, you need to answer all 30 test questions correctly. The test can be taken an unlimited number of times.

Food Handler Level 2 Training (Standard)

In the Food Handler Level 2 Training, you will learn about basic food safety on topics such as: keeping food safe, temperature danger zone, hot and cold holding, avoiding cross-contamination, personal hygiene, and cleaning and sanitizing.

The training uses short informative and engaging animated lessons and videos.

Food Handler Level 2 Training is available in English, Spanish, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Serbo-Croatian, and American Sign Language (ASL)

This training is approximately 75 minutes long. In order to receive the course certificate, you need to pass a 30-question test with at least 21 correct answers. The test can be taken twice.

Food Safety Essentials for Special Events and Festivals

The Food Safety Essentials for Special Events and Festivals training is for food vendors and food handlers (employees and volunteers) working with food or beverages at markets and events. You will learn basic food safety principles including how to keep foods safe, the temperature danger zone, hot and cold holding, avoiding cross-contamination, personal hygiene, and cleaning and sanitizing. 

The training uses short informative and engaging animated lessons and videos.

The Food Safety for Special Events and Festivals is available in English and Spanish.

This training typically takes approximately 45 minutes to one hour to complete. In order to receive the course certificate, you need to pass a 20-question test with at least 14 correct answers. The test can be twice.
