How is the City working to keep Minneapolis and its residents safe?
The Mayor of Minneapolis, who is ultimately responsible for providing overall direction and control of city government resources to a disaster, has established an Emergency Management Office and a Director of Emergency Management within the City Coordinator Department. The Emergency Management Director serves at the direction of the Mayor and coordinates all aspects of the Minneapolis’ Emergency Operation Plan. The Emergency Plan, which was originally developed for natural and man-made disasters, was strengthened to include emergency responses to potential terrorist acts using weapons of mass destruction.
Increased police presence
In case of any emergency, natural or man-made, or when the Department of Homeland Security increases its threat advisory to High or Severe, there will be increase police presence in the community. Additional police officers will also be assigned to all government buildings, downtown Minneapolis and in our neighborhoods. Community Crime Prevention and SAFE teams will also be detailed to respond to 9-1-1 calls if needed.
Partnerships with the federal, state and county authorities
Minneapolis has and continues to collaborate and cooperate with federal, state and county law enforcement. Minneapolis’ Chief of Police meets regularly to share and gather new information as it becomes available concerning the City of Minneapolis. Federal authorities assigned to this region have been providing continuous updates about any new information.
Network of informed citizens
Neighborhood block clubs have been alerted and will be kept informed.
Increased capacity in the 9-1-1- Center
Additional emergency communications staff is on duty to respond if call volumes rise.
Medical community is prepared
All metro-area hospitals are on preparedness alert status and ambulance services and other support agencies are ready to respond to any emergency situations.
